Problematic PFAS
Apple Valley has a growing PFAS problem. Two types of PFAS (PFOA and PFOS) as well as radium were measured in the multiple wells. At least one toxin impacted 16 of the wells that serve Apple Valley. The City is currently keeping contaminants under federal limits by blending but it is uncertain how long that will be possible. Also, the unenforceable goal set by the EPA for these is ZERO as that is the only level known to be safe. Apple Valley estimates a filtration system for removal will cost anywhere from $68-$164 million. Now, because the EPA plans to extend the deadline for meeting limits from 2029 to 2031, the City legally has more time to deal with the problem; they won’t be removed until 2030. In the meantime, anyone drinking Apple Valley tap water may want to consider using a filter. There is no safe level known and pregnant women, infants and young children are particularly at risk.
